Longstreth/NFHCA Division III Regional Players of the Year Announced

GILBERT, Ariz. - Six student-athletes were selected as the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Regional Players of the Year, it was announced on Thursday.

The Regional Player of the Year honors went to Kenyon senior midfielder Shannon Hart (Great Lakes), MIT senior forward Emily Penn (New England East), Trinity senior forward Kelcie Finn (New England West), William Smith senior forward Hannah Wood (North Atlantic), Messiah senior forward Carissa Gehman (South Atlantic) and Franklin & Marshall sophomore forward Erin Coverdale (South).

Great Lakes Region Player of the Year: Shannon Hart, Kenyon (Sr., M)

Hart was named the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Midfielder of the Year for her play this season while also earning a four-time selection to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region Team. Hart started all 19 games for her squad this season and tallied 13 points on six goals and an assist. She finished her career with 30 goals and 11 assists for 71 points.

New England East Region Player of the Year: Emily Penn, MIT (Sr., F)

Penn was selected as the Athlete of the Year in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) as she totaled 16 goals and six assists for 38 points in 2017. She recorded five multiple-goal games with a pair of hat tricks, and led the conference with six game-winning goals. She started all 19 games for MIT and led her team in goals, points, shots (95) and shots on goal (65).

New England West Region Player of the Year: Kelcie Finn, Trinity (Sr., F)

Finn repeats as the New England West Region Player of the Year after also claiming her second straight Player of the Year award in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Finn led her conference with 29 goals and 68 points this season, finishing in the top-six nationally in both categories. She broke every offensive record at Trinity over the course of her career as she finished with 92 goals and 39 assists for 223 points. Finn was named the Longstreth/NFHCA Division III National Player of the Year in 2016.

North Atlantic Region Player of the Year: Hannah Wood, William Smith (Sr., F)

Wood was named the Offensive Player of the Year in the Liberty League for the second straight season after leading her team in scoring for the fourth time in as many years. She notched 21 goals and seven assists for 49 points this season, and finished the year in the top 20 nationally in both points per game (2.72) and goals per game (1.17). She finished her career as William Smith’s all-time leading scorer with 95 goals.

South Atlantic Region Player of the Year: Carissa Gehman, Messiah (Sr., F)

Gehman made the South Atlantic All-Region First Team in each of her four seasons for the Falcons. She capped her career in style with 31 goals and 11 assists for 73 points this season as Messiah made a return trip to the national title game. Gehman was also selected as the Offensive Player of the Year in the Middle Atlantic Conferences (MAC) Commonwealth.

South Region Player of the Year: Erin Coverdale, Franklin & Marshall (So., F)

Coverdale was named the Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was one of three unanimous selections to the conference's first team while also earning All-South Region status. She led her team with 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points for the season.
