GILBERT, Ariz. — The College of New Jersey took first place in the final edition of the 2019 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll. The Lions enter the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament undefeated and as New Jersey Athletic Conference Champions. They will face the winners of the first-round contest between No. 6 Franklin & Marshall College and Empire 8 Champions, Hartwick College.
The Top Five
Second-ranked Middlebury College earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Champions — it was their third-straight NESCAC Championship and their seventh overall. The Salisbury University Sea Gulls were crowned the Capital Athletic Conference Champions and were issued a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament.
No. 4 Tufts University was runner up in the NESCAC Championship — they will play the winners of the first-round game between Liberty League Champions, the University of Rochester, and Denison University, North Coast Athletic Conference Champions.
Rounding out the top five this week are the Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays. Hopkins was crowned the Centennial Conference Champions after a tight final with No. 6 F&M. The Blue Jays will meet either No. 11 Messiah College or Worcester State University in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The Division III NCAA postseason begins on Wednesday with a slate of eight first-round games — sixteen teams will fight for a chance to play the eight programs that were awarded first-round byes. The second round of the tournament will commence on Saturday, November 16.
