Shippensburg at No. 1 in Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II Coaches Poll

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Defending national champion Shippensburg claimed the top spot in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Preseason Coaches Poll announced on Tuesday.

The Raiders held the top spot by accumulating 218 points and 14 first-place votes in the poll. Shippensburg comes in just ahead of two other members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), with East Stroudsburg at No. 2 in the ranking and Millersville following at No. 3.

Three squads from the Northeast-10 Conference filled out the top five with Saint Anselm at No. 4 and both Stonehill and LIU Post sharing the No. 5 spot. The rest of the poll included No. 7 West Chester, No. 8 Bloomsburg, No. 9 Merrimack and No. 10 Adelphi.

The 2017 season opens up on Thursday and the weekend action includes four top-10 matchups, including a pair of top-five affairs involving Stonehill as the No. 5-ranked Skyhawks visit No. 3 Millersville on Saturday and No. 2 East Stroudsburg on Sunday. East Stroudsburg also hosts No. 9 Merrimack on Saturday, while No. 10 Adelphi is at No. 7 West Chester on Friday.

The next Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II Coaches Poll will be announced on Tuesday, September 12. The poll is voted on by NFHCA member coaches, and has no bearing on selection to the 2017 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship.
